Bible Study Guide (Gog and Magog War Conclusion)
The gog and magog war is no ordinary conflict. It is not merely one battle among many—it is a battle to begin many. It occupies the entire prophetic window of the future that God revealed through Ezekiel. This war stands as a defining event in Bible prophecy, marking a clear transition point in redemptive history.

Today, we live in a narrow sliver of prophetic time—between Ezekiel 37 and Ezekiel 38 and 39. While the restoration of the nation of Israel is real and undeniable, it is not yet complete. We continue to witness active Aliyah, with Jews returning to the land from all over the world. This will continue to accelerate. As antisemitism rises rapidly across the globe, it will increasingly drive the remnant of the Jewish people back to the land God promised to them.
If you have examined the previous Bible studies on Ezekiel 37 and Ezekiel 38, it becomes clear that the gog and magog war is not a distant or symbolic event. It stands on the threshold of the present time. Ezekiel 38 and 39 together describe the same war—one that will ultimately usher in the seven-year Tribulation period.
Where Ezekiel 38 focuses on the formation and invasion of the coalition, Ezekiel 39 explains the deeper purpose of the war and reveals how it will end. Together, Ezekiel 38 and 39 provide a complete prophetic picture of the gog and magog war—from its ignition to its supernatural conclusion.
Ezekiel 39 and the Purpose Behind the Gog and Magog War
The Ezekiel coalition—Russia, Iran, Turkey, Libya, and Ethiopia—has been forming openly and steadily. Strategic partnerships are being signed. Military cooperation is increasing. and shared hostility toward Israel is undeniable. Ezekiel 39 is no longer theoretical. What was once dismissed as impossible is now unfolding in real time.
The economies of these nations are in serious decline. They are being boxed in politically, economically, and militarily by Israel and the United States. Pressure is mounting, and desperation is growing. History has always shown that failing regimes look outward for conquest.
Israel has systematically dismantled Iran’s terror infrastructure throughout the region—Islamic Jihad, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Syrian proxy forces. What Iran is spending billions of dollars building to destroy Israel has been reduced to a shell. Their leaders neglected their own people to fund terror. And what they built has now been exposed as ineffective.
Is this the end of Iran? Absolutely not.
In fact, this very weakening is part of the divine setup for the gog and magog war. Iran (Persia) has been forced to seek protection and strength from more powerful allies. This is driving them directly into the arms of Russia. Notably, Persia is the first nation mentioned in the coalition to align with Gog in the invasion of Israel.
Events are moving rapidly to a close.
When they do, the gog and magog war will begin. We are standing on the cusp.
God Targets the Leader of Gog and Magog (Ezekiel 39:1-2)
(Verses 1–2) God gives Ezekiel the command in the same manner He did at the opening of Ezekiel 38. The target is clear: the leader of Russia and the entire gog and magog coalition.
Where Ezekiel 38 identified the nations that would come against Israel, Ezekiel 39 becomes precise about what will happen during the invasion—who will win, who will lose, and who is truly orchestrating the events.
The Defeat of Gog Is Declared Immediately (Ezekiel 39:3)
(Verse 3) God wastes no time in declaring the outcome of the gog and magog war.
“Then I will strike your bow from your left hand and make your arrows drop from your right hand.” (Ezekiel 39:3)
In just a few verses, the outcome is settled. God Himself will destroy the coalition described in Ezekiel 38 and 39. This is not a close battle. It is decisive and absolute.
God is not just sitting idly by wondering what’s going to happen next. He’s the One almighty, powerful, and sovereign God that sits on His throne. His hand rests on all things and things work for the good of His purpose and will.
God Reveals Why the Gog and Magog War Happens (Ezekiel 39:4-8)
(Verses 4–8) The defeat will be supernatural. The invaders will fall across the land of Israel and become food for birds and wild animals.
God then reveals why He drew this coalition into Israel in the first place.
“I will make known my holy name among my people Israel. I will no longer let my holy name be profaned, and the nations will know that I the Lord am the Holy One in Israel.” (Ezekiel 39:7)
This victory will remove all doubt. Pagan nations and nominal Christians alike will know that the destruction of gog and magog was the work of the sovereign Lord—the One who directs all things according to His will.
God emphasizes certainty with four declarative statements:
- “For I have spoken”
- “It is coming!”
- “It will surely take place”
- “This is the day I have spoken of”
Not one syllable of God’s Word has failed in thousands of years. The gog and magog war will be no exception.
Ezekiel 39 and the Timing of the Tribulation (Ezekiel 39:9-10)
Scholars differ on whether this war occurs immediately before or after the rapture. What is clear is that it takes place at the start of the Tribulation and likely ignites a chain of global conflicts throughout the seven-year period. The Tribulation will be a time of war.
(Verses 9–10) The aftermath will be staggering. Weapons and equipment left behind will provide fuel for seven years.
This perfectly aligns with Daniel’s prophecy of the Tribulation period:
“He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering…” (Daniel 9:27)
This strongly suggests the gog and magog war occurs after the rapture and at the beginning of the Tribulation.
Cleansing the Land After the Gog and Magog War (Ezekiel 39:12-20)
(Verses 12–14) The number of bodies will require a national effort to cleanse the land. God has already designated a burial place for Gog and his armies. The process will take seven months.
(Verses 14–16) Even after seven months, specialized teams will continue searching the land to remove every remaining trace of the enemy.
(Verses 17–20) The slaughter will be so vast that birds and animals will not be able to consume all the remains. There will be no survivors.
God’s Glory Revealed to the Nations (Ezekiel 39:21-24)
(Verses 21–24) From Joshua’s conquest to 1948, Israel’s survival defied all odds. After 1948, Israel repeatedly defeated enemies that vastly outnumbered and outmatched them.
Yet if those miracles were subtle, the defeat of the gog and magog war will be unmistakable.
“I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them.” (Ezekiel 39:21)
The world will finally recognize that God both scattered Israel and restored her—by His hand alone.
Ezekiel 39 and the Final Restoration of Israel (Ezekiel 39:24-29)
(Verses 24–29) God turns His focus to the final restoration of the remnant—Jews gathered from all nations who will survive the Tribulation, leaving none behind.
This explains the unprecedented rise in antisemitism today. God is using opposition to drive His people home.
Then comes one of the most powerful promises in Ezekiel 39:
“I will no longer hide my face from them, for I will pour out my Spirit on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.” (Ezekiel 39:29)
Jesus echoed this truth:
“For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’” (Matthew 23:39)
The time of the Gentiles will end. Israel’s blindness will be removed. They will recognize Jesus as Messiah at His Second Coming. This will take place at the end of the seven-year Tribulation.
The Seven-Year Gap and the Threshold We Now Stand On
Between Ezekiel 39 and 40 lies a seven-year gap—the Tribulation. Ezekiel then turns his attention to the Millennial Temple and the division of the land.
That gap is not a mystery. Daniel revealed it—the final week of the seventy weeks prophecy.
We are now watching all prophetic signs converge. The gog and magog war is approaching. The rapture is imminent. And the Word of God is unfolding exactly as written.
We are standing at the threshold.
Closing Reflection On Redemption
Dear friends, the time is drawing near—not for fear, but for redemption. God’s Word has never been clearer, and His mercy has never been farther from us. He loves you deeply and desires that you be with Him in the place He has prepared for you.
For this reason, He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer and die so that your sins could be forgiven and your debt fully paid. God is calling you today—not through religion, not through a priest, and not through empty Sunday rituals—but through a living, personal relationship with His Son.
He is calling you to repent, to turn from sin, and to place your faith fully in Jesus Christ alone. Salvation is not earned, inherited, or maintained by works. It is a gift of grace, offered freely to all who will receive it.
As the prophetic clock accelerates and God’s redemptive purposes unfold before our eyes, now is the time to respond. Today is the day of salvation. His arms are open, His promises are true, and His Word has never failed.
Do not delay. Come to Him while the door of grace remains open.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with humble hearts, thankful for Your perfect and unchanging Word. As we see Your plans unfolding just as You declared, draw us closer to You. Search our hearts, lead us to repentance, and strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ alone. Help us to walk in truth, to live with urgency, and to trust fully in Your sovereign will. Prepare us for what lies ahead, lead us to share with others, and keep our eyes fixed on You until the day we see You face to face.
In Jesus’ holy and precious name, Amen.
