What’s the Meaning and the Secret Behind the 12 Foundation Stones of the New Jerusalem?

Is there something hidden in the 12 foundation stones of the new Jerusalem? The description seems clear. But is there something we can’t see?

Michael was a 22-year-old college student from California who had been color blind his entire life. He had red-green color blindness, the most common type, which meant he couldn’t distinguish between many shades of red, green, brown, and orange. For him, autumn trees looked mostly dull, and he never fully understood why people were so excited about sunsets or fireworks.

One day, his friends surprised him for his birthday with a pair of EnChroma glasses—specially engineered to enhance color perception for people with color blindness. They took him to a local botanical garden, a place he had visited many times but never seen in full color.

The moment Michael put on the glasses, he froze.

His eyes welled up with tears. The flowers weren’t just “bright” anymore—they were radiant. Greens no longer blended into browns. A vibrant red tulip stood out like it was glowing. For the first time, he saw the sharp contrast between a blue sky and white clouds. When someone pointed to a rainbow arcing across the late afternoon sky, Michael just stood there, overwhelmed. “Is this what you’ve all been seeing this whole time?” he asked, voice shaking.

That single experience changed how Michael saw the world—literally and emotionally. He described the moment as “like gaining a sixth sense,” and later said it made him more appreciative of even the smallest things: fruit at a market, a painted mural, or a red cardinal on a tree.

Describing the 12 Foundation Stones of the New Jerusalem

(Verse 18) The angel has just finished revealing to John the dimensions of the new city of Jerusalem. Now, the angel will show him some of the cities details.

John sees a city of gold as pure as glass. The walls of the city were made of jasper. I imagine that the purity of gold and the radiance of the jasper will be far greater than the purest gold and finest jasper that we have here on this planet.

It’ll be a new gold and new jasper newly created by God for His Holy City.

(Verses 19-21) Typically, the foundation of any wall or building is buried beneath the surface of the soil. This is the part of a structure that’s usually not seen. But in the 12 foundation stones of the new Jerusalem, they’ll be exposed for the eyes to see.

Not just that, but the finest minerals will be used to build and decorate the 12 foundations. That’s right. Not one foundation but 12 foundation stones of the purest and finest quality likely not found in our present cursed world.

What’s the Significance of the 12 Foundation Stones of the New Jerusalem?

God does not reveal the reason for the magnificence of the foundation of the new Holy City. What we know is that it’ll be very different from anything our minds could possibly wrap it’s arms around. But we’ll see in a moment there may be something more than meets the eye.

The First Foundation Stone

Jasper symbolizes purity, glory, and the presence of God. It is described in Revelation 4:3 as part of God’s throne appearance and here in Revelation 21 as foundational to the New Jerusalem, radiating like crystal. Jasper’s brilliance represents the holiness and majesty of God, making it a powerful symbol of divine beauty and eternal perfection.

The Second Foundation Stone

Sapphire symbolizes heavenly glory, divine favor, and purity. It is associated with God’s throne in Exodus 24:10, where the pavement beneath Him appeared like a sapphire stone, and in Ezekiel 1:26, describing the throne itself. Sapphire represents the majesty and unshakable truth of God, reflecting His transcendent and holy nature.

The Third Foundation Stone

Agate’s biblical significance lies in its role as a symbol of identity, value, and divine design within the priestly and covenantal structure of ancient Israel. Agate, as a semi-precious stone, represents God’s provision of beauty and order among His people. Though not heavily featured, agate’s presence alongside other stones like sapphire, jasper, and emerald links it to themes of divine glory, priestly mediation, and the heavenly reality reflected in Israel’s worship system.

The Fourth Foundation Stone

Emerald symbolizes beauty, divine glory, and majesty. It appears in the High Priest’s breastplate (Exodus 28:18) and is also described as part of the heavenly throne in Revelation 4:3, where a rainbow “resembling an emerald” surrounds God’s throne. This connects the emerald with God’s holiness, His covenantal promise, and the splendor of His presence.

The Fifth Foundation Stone

Onyx represents strength, dignity, and priestly significance. It is one of the stones in the High Priest’s garments, engraved with the names of Israel’s tribes and worn on the shoulders (Exodus 28:9–12). Onyx also appears in Eden’s description (Genesis 2:12), linking it to divine provision and paradise. Its use symbolizes remembrance before God and the weight of spiritual responsibility.

The Sixth Foundation Stone

Ruby symbolizes wisdom, value, and virtue. Though translations vary, rubies are often mentioned in comparison to wisdom—“she is more precious than rubies” (Proverbs 3:15; 8:11). This highlights the incomparable worth of godly wisdom and character. Rubies also suggest royalty and richness, reflecting the beauty of a life aligned with God’s truth.

The Seventh Foundation Stone

Chrysolite represents radiance, divine glory, and purity. It is listed among the twelve stones in the High Priest’s breastplate (Exodus 28:20). Its golden-green brilliance symbolizes the light and holiness of God’s presence, and His eternal beauty revealed in both worship and the future heavenly city.

The Eighth Foundation Stone

Beryl symbolizes divine majesty, protection, and glory. It appears in the High Priest’s breastplate (Exodus 28:20). Beryl is also part of Ezekiel’s vision of heavenly beings (Ezekiel 1:16; 10:9), reflecting the radiance of God’s throne and the splendor of His divine presence.

The Ninth Foundation Stone

Topaz signifies purity, beauty, and divine brilliance. It is one of the stones in the High Priest’s breastplate (Exodus 28:17). Its radiant glow represents the light of God’s presence and the preciousness of His people in His divine plan.

The Tenth Foundation Stone

Turquoise symbolizes heavenly beauty, value, and spiritual richness. While not as frequently mentioned, it appears in some translations of Ezekiel 28:13 and Ezekiel 27:16, describing the splendor of Eden and the trade riches of Tyre. Its vibrant color evokes the glory of creation and the preciousness of God’s blessings, often linked to divine craftsmanship and ornamentation.

The Eleventh Foundation Stone

Jacinth (also spelled hyacinth) symbolizes fire, judgment, and divine majesty. It appears in Revelation 9:17 describing the breastplates of horsemen in a vision of judgment. Its deep reddish-orange hue reflects both the power of God’s justice and the radiant beauty of His eternal city.

The Twelfth Foundation Stone

Amethyst symbolizes royalty, spiritual wisdom, and divine favor. It is listed as one of the twelve foundation stones of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:20) and appears in the High Priest’s breastplate (Exodus 28:19). Its rich purple color represents nobility and devotion, reflecting a heart set apart for God and the eternal beauty of His kingdom.

Have you ever seen a pearl that size of a gate? This is not just any gate. This gate will be so large because the city walls will be massive. One day you’ll see a pearl bigger than exists in this world. And you’ll walk on a street made of the finest gold ever. There will be no need to ask a jeweler what the grade of gold this will be. There will be none finer.

Why the Need for 12 Foundation Stones of the New Jerusalem?

The dimensions of the new Jerusalem clearly indicate that this will be a city different from anything anyone on this earth has ever experienced or could even fathom.

Many people throughout the ages have spoken of creating a Utopian society. The problem with this is mankind and the sins of the heart are the very things that prevent any such Utopian society from ever existing on this planet.

God will be the one to create a Utopian world. One beyond humanity’s imagination. The Bible calls it the 1000 year reign of Christ.

Unfortunately, the very people that claim to want to create this society will be the one’s who’ll not get to experience the overwhelming beauty of the 12 stones of the new Jerusalem. Neither will they ever get to know what’s it’s like to live among our Creator and Savior.

For building a society apart from God is the sin of pride. A sin older than creation itself. All who’ve attempted it have failed and no longer exist.

Many of these things will go unexplained until we arrive at our ultimate destination.

Where Did the Temple Go?

(Verse 22) After the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, it was John’s purpose to spread the word of the Good News of Jesus’ resurrection. It also became his purpose to plant new Christian churches and lead new believers throughout Asia Minor and further west.

But this new Jerusalem would be different. John saw no temple. For God Himself and Christ would be the temple. The temple had always been a place where the presence of God rested. It was the people’s connection to God.

God and Jesus will be present in our midst in the new Holy City. There will be no need for a temple. What an overwhelming thought that is to know that we will see and hear God and Jesus among us. It will be like God’s presence in the Garden of Eden when He spoke to Adam and Eve. But this new city will be much better.

There Will Be No Night!

(Verse 23) Seven key figures of the Old and New Testament have witnessed the glory and radiant brilliance of God. They’ve often described it as overwhelming light, radiance, or a divine presence.

Moses first encountered God’s brilliance at the burning bush (Exodus 3); and on Mount Sinai. In fact, Mose’s face was still radiating the brilliance of God’s glory when he spoke to the Israelites after descending Mt. Sinai. (Exodus 33:18–23; 34:29–35).

Isaiah had a similar encounter in his Temple vision (Isaiah 6:1–5).

Ezekiel had two dazzling, fiery visions of God’s glory. First encounter was the River Chebar vision (Ezekiel 1); and then his throne vision (Ezekiel 10).

Daniel’s vision of the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man (Daniel 7:9–10, 13–14) were two more encounters by an Old Testament prophet.

Elijah experienced God’s presence on Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:9–18) which caused him to cover his face in reverence.

John, the Apostle and Revelation Prophet had the blessed privilege of being shown Revelation by God’s angels. John saw Christ in glory and the radiant throne of God, surrounded by brilliant light, rainbows, and thunder (Revelation 1:12–17; 4:1–11).

Paul, the Apostle encountered Christ on the Road to Damascus at his conversion. He saw a bright light from heaven and heard the voice of Jesus; was blinded by the brilliance (Acts 9:3–6; 22:6–11; 2 Corinthians 12:2–4).

No Sun Will Shine on the 12 Foundation Stones of the New Jerusalem

This radiant, majestic and all mighty divine brilliance that each of these men witnessed will shine upon the citizens of the new Holy City. Unlike these seven men, we will experience the full brilliance of God’s radiant light. There will be no need for a sun or moon.

No more need for sun tan lotion. Never have to worry about wrinkles or sun exposure. God’s brilliance will be better than all the vitamins and nutrients you could possibly take.

In fact, there will not even be a period that we call night. For God’s brilliance will shine upon us for eternity.

Will There Be Nations on the New Earth?

(Verses 24-26) John records there will be nations and kings on the new earth. It hints at the fact that there will be something similar to the Feast of Tabernacles, where nations and kings will come to the New Jerusalem to tabernacle with God and Christ.

The scriptures don’t give us any more info on this than what’s here in these verses. God has revealed to us what He wishes for us to know.

There is so much more that God could’ve revealed to us. But it’s likely our minds could not comprehend any of it. This here alone is difficult enough for us to understand. But because God said it, it will happen. His words are trustworthy and true.

(Verse 27) John records clearly that nothing impure will ever enter the new Jerusalem. It’ll be the Holy City and it’ll remain that way for eternity. It’ll belong to God and we will be with Him and Christ for eternity.

The fact that I can’t comprehend much of what it’s going to be like gives me great comfort and joy. Because it tells me it’s going to be so different from this God forsaken fallen world that we currently live in.

Are We All Color Blind?

Do you remember Michael from the beginning of this Bible study who was color blind?

The 12 foundation stones of the new Jerusalem are given little credit for their beauty and divine magnificence as part of God’s creation. If you go into a jewelry store and look at one of these beautiful stones in the light, it radiates with such splendor.

What could it possibly look like to have 12 foundations together gleaming all at once with the brilliance all of these precious stones layered upon one another?

In our world there are three traditional primary colors. Is it possible that our glorified bodies will be transformed in such a way that our eyes will be open to a world of colors beyond our wildest imaginations, just like when Michael who was color blind, put on the special glasses to be able to see colors he couldn’t originally see?

I think it’s more than possible. It think it’s highly likely that what God has in store for us is beyond anything the smallness of our flesh can come close to conjuring up. The 12 foundation stones of the new Jerusalem will reveal to us a brilliance that we can’t even imagine or will ever experience in our place and condition. Imagine adding three more primary colors that we’ve never seen.

When we see it, will we freeze like Michael? Will tears well up and run down our face? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Here’s the most important question that deserves your utmost undivided attention. Is your name written in the Lamb’s book of life? Only these will be with God and Christ in the new Jerusalem.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,” (Ephesians 3:20)
